Dungeness Spit
Taking advantage of good weather and spare time, I drove my van out to Sequim, WA after skiing to hike the Dungeness Spit, the longest sand spit in North America. I had stopped here before in 2023 but, due to time constraints, was not able to hike all the way to the lighthouse. This time I wanted to do the entire round trip, which works out to 11 miles.

I camped in a nearby RV park for two nights and set out on trail around 10 AM, Thursday February 27th. The weather was fabulous, fairly warm with sunny skies and a light breeze. I knew high tide was at 2 PM, so starting off at 10 AM would make the entire trip orbiting the high tide point. This is not a problem, it just leaves less room on the transit, which is relegated to the left side (leaving) of the spit. The other side is off limits as a wild life refuge.

During my 5 hour jaunt, I saw but 4 people (excluding the keepers at the lighthouse). At one point I sat on a log with my camera trained on a juvenile bald eagle, perched on a log. I sat in this position upwards of 20 minutes before he decided to take flight, but I was ready and did some rapid fire shots of his launch. This, of course, was a highlight of the day.

The entire trip had a slow rhythm, my steps naturally synching to the waves. Once at the lighthouse I encountered some of the weekly residents there (there is a separate house) that take care of the grounds and conduct tours. Ryan was my tour guide up to the light, giving me a smattering of history and identifying distant points from the high vantage. The former apartment rooms (the light has been automated since 1992) are now home to the museum. After having my packed lunch (there is no water available on the hike) on a bench overlooking the water, I was off to retrace my steps back to the vehicle, 5.5 miles away. All in all, this was one of the most serene hikes I have ever done. The Spit video can be seen here.
